MUSIC: July 4th Weekend at Low Tide Bar
Low Tide Bar is going all in this July 4th weekend. Every night, Friday through Monday, the bar is playing host to a different musical guest. The Shipwrecks do their thing live on Friday, The Supertones step up Saturday, then Indaculture on Sunday and DJ Dirtyfinger closes the party weekend out on Monday. Nothing like booze and free music by the beach.

FILM: Born on the Fourth of July
For movie studios, July 4th weekend has become a key time to release potential summer blockbusters. Perhaps you recall heading to the theater before catching the fireworks to check out Magic Mike (2012), Armageddon (1998), or War of the Worlds (2005). This weekend, the Museum of the Moving Image revisits films that were introduced to audiences over a Fourth of Julys past. In addition to the aforementioned, Back the Future (1985), and Magic Mike XXL (2015) are also screening.

PARTY: Might Get Weird final party
It’s the end of era. MGW throws their last shindig at Sugar Hill Disco. The line-up includes Dash Speaks, Lucas Walters, Kristos, NSR, Luka Tacon, David Kiss, Prtmnto and Haruka Salt. A portion of the proceeds go towards helping the victims and families of the Pulse nightclub tragedy.

PARTY: NY Night Train 3rd of July Rockaway Beach Blowout w/Jonathan Toubin
On July 4th eve, you can dance to soul music on a roof in Bushwick (see above), or you can head out to Rockaway to cut a rug at Rippers. Jonathan Toubin is taking his famous collection of 45s out to the beach for a dance party at everyone’s favorite boardwalk food stand. Yep, NY Night Train can actually be two places at once. It’s magic.

4th of July 2016 NYC EventsART: Rockaway! Opening at Fort Tilden
This weekend is the grand unveiling of artist Katharina Grosse’s seaside site-specific outdoor exhibition organized by MoMA PS1 in collaboration with the Rockaway Artists Alliance, Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy, National Park Service, Central Park Conservancy, NYC Parks & Recreation and Rockaway Beach Surf Club. Entitled Rockaway!, the installation transforms Fort Tilden’s decaying aquatics building into a monumental artwork that reflects the bold colors of sunset in the Rockaways. For the work, Grosse employed her unique spray painting technique. A ribbon cutting ceremony takes place at 4pm.

FESTIVAL: Festival of Independence
A trip to the Seaport should be in order this weekend for their Festival of Independence. The free event runs two days, Sunday and Monday, and features music, art, fashion and food. Noisey had a hand in selecting the bands for the Fulton Street Stage, with a lineup that includes Wild Nothing, Lee Fields & The Expressions, Porches, Yumi Zouma, Public Access TV, D.R.A.M., Phony Ppl, and MeLo-X. On Monday, a Peck Slip stage will also play host to performances by Woods, The Mystery Lights, The Lemon Twigs and more. Plus there will be food by Smorgasburg, a pop-up market curated by Northern Grade, the Culture District Parson’s exhibit and Design Market, and fireworks.

Spend this 4th revisiting Ivan Reitman’s classic comedy about military life, Stripes. FILM: HBO Bryant Park Film Festival: Top Gun
The HBO Bryant Park Film Festival is screening an all-american classic this July 4th, Top Gun. Directed by the late Tony Scott, the 1986 film stars Tom Cruise as Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, a young and cocky Naval aviator who has some growing up to do. Tim Robbins, Kelly McGillis and Val Kilmer round out the cast of this film which took home an Oscar for Best Original Song. Also, a sequel is supposedly in the works which finds Cruise reprising his role.
