Abbi Jacobson on Tour, ‘Carry This Book’ out Now

Hey kids, we hope you have some space in your book bags because Abbi Jacobson’s new book has dropped. Entitled Carry This Book, the Broad City co-creator’s latest endeavor finds her embracing her fascination with the things people carry in their bags. From Martha Stewart to Joey Tribbiani, Jacobson illustrates what a variety of famous people and fictional characters might walk around with on the regular. Jacobson kicked off a short tour in support of the book today with an appearance on Good Morning America, an AOL Build event, and a conversation with Lena Dunham at Symphony Space. On Wednesday, she will be at Space Ninety 8 with her Broad City co-conspirator Ilana Glazer before hitting up Washington DC, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles. You can find all her scheduled public appearances below.

During her AOL Build chat, Jacobson explained that her book was inspired by a novel she read in middle school, Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried. In his book, which is about a platoon of American soldiers in the Vietnam War, O’Brien introduces his characters by exploring the objects they carry. Jacobson always thought this was an intriguing approach to storytelling and pitched her book as being similar but with a focus on celebrity culture and using illustration. Jacobson also sees her new book as an extension of her Broad City character’s Famous Favorites art project, which finds “Abbi” making funny drawings of what she imagines famous people’s favorite foods might be.

In addition to Martha Stewart and Joey (who incidentally is not her favorite Friends’ character, that’s Ross), Jacobson also fantasized about the bag contents of such notable personalities as Beyonce, Susan B. Anthony, Oprah, Maya Angelou, Michelle Obama, Anna Wintour, Banksy, David Bowie, Prince, and Ruth Bader Ginsberg, who she sees toting around Beats by Dre headphones and listening to jock jams. She even has a spread devoted to Donald J. Trump, which she worked on about six months ago. Jacobson remarked that if she drew it now it would be much angrier.

In terms of insight into what she carries, in the book she includes the contents of her real-life toiletry bag, which must be pretty roomy. It houses such items as sea salt spray, six different tiny eye creams, condoms, perfume samples, hotel moisturizers, Midol, Advil, panty liners, make-up, and more. As far as her regular bag, Jacobson always stocks it with a notebook, a pen, lip gloss, lipstick, tampons, a charger and a good book. Her current read of choice is Phoebe Robinson’s You Can’t Touch My Hair: And Other Things I Still Have to Explain, which she recommends people read after finishing her book.

A charming and funny read, Carry This Book is both a window into Jacobson’s quirky personality and also an excellent time capsule with tons of hilarious pop culture references. The book is out now via Viking Books, a division of Penguin, and is available in stores or at your favorite online bookseller.
