It’s April Bloomfield Week at Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream


While meat eaters seem to be chopping at the bit for April Bloomfield’s gourmet take on a chopped cheese, we’ve been much more preoccupied with the ice cream recipe she came up with for Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream. Bloomfield is this week’s heavy hitter at the frosty haven, and as such, came up with an ice cream version of her Spotted Pig classic banoffee pie which is a grand slam home run. We suggest getting one before the flavor goes off menu on Sunday, August 28.

A series done in partnership with Food Book Fair, Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream’s Heavy Hitters finds some of the city’s top chefs coming up with ice cream flavors for the shop during the month of August. Each week, a different culinary wizard steps up to bat and their flavor is available for one week only. So far, the series has featured Chef Mario Batali’s Molto Mario’s Modena Creamsicle; Chef Marco Canora’s plum and verbena mash-up William Carlos Williams; and Chef Carlo Mirarachi’s The Guy in the Kimono, a lime, coconut and cilantro sorbet. Bloomfield’s reign will be followed by restaurateur Andrew Tarlow, who will be serving up his Irishman’s Peach Ice Cream starting on Monday, August 29.

As for Bloomfield’s Banoffee ice cream entry, it’s quite simply heaven in a cup. It consists of banana ice cream, shortbreads, dulce de leche, whipped cream and chocolate shavings (see photo below). It’s definitely worth the sometimes long wait at the Lower East Side parlor. Trust us, the lactose tolerant will thank us later.
