A Look Inside Brooklyn Bazaar’s New Art Deco Greenpoint Home (Photos)

Booted from its Greenpoint home in May 2015, Brooklyn Bazaar has finally settled into a new space and reopens this weekend. The shopping/amusement center/music venue has taken over the former Polish catering hall Polonaise Terrance, located at 150 Greenpoint Avenue. The new incarnation will be open 7 days a week and has a concert space/night club, an anchor restaurant, a mini golf course, a vendor/events hall, and karaoke and ping pong rooms. We attended a preview the other night. See our photo gallery below.

Inspired by Southeast Asian night markets, Brooklyn Bazaar was founded by attorney Aaron Broudo and musician Belvy Klein in 2010. It began as an evening of shopping, eating and swaying to YACHT at Dekalb Market in the fall of 2011. The next iteration ran three nights, was housed in a 40,000 square-foot warehouse on the Williamsburg waterfront, and saw performances by the Hold Steady, Fucked Up, and DFA’s James Murphy. In 2013, Brooklyn Bazaar moved into a permanent (or until-the-landlord-got-a-better-offer-from-BMW) home in Greenpoint at 165 Banker Street. Occupying a 24,000 sq. ft space, the market hosted an eclectic mix of independent artists, crafters, breweries, chefs, and designers, as well as featured table tennis, mini golf and concerts curated by media, music blogs and record labels. The closing of Banker Street came just as the organizers were expanding to Riis Park in the Rockaways. That outpost is still going strong.

The first thing you notice upon entering the new Brooklyn Bazaar space is that the art deco charm of the venue’s former tenant was kept pretty much intact. It’s maze-like, with rooms on three levels, and loads of mirrors and gold accents. The lower level is jam packed with amusements and has low ceilings, which can feel a little claustrophobic. There is restaurant on site that is manned by the Brooklyn Star and has a nice lounge area to hang out in. As for the upstairs music venue, it’s a decent size and sports a solid sound system. We actually hadn’t been to Polonaise Terrace before, but we met a couple of 30-something women who had. Their prom had actually taken place there some years ago and they said the interior was exactly the same.

The new Brooklyn Bazaar already has a full dance card. Enlisting the curating prowess of folks like AdHoc, TimeOut NY, and The Fader, there are heaps of concerts on the schedule. Among those performing are I Am the Avalanche, Ted Leo, Penguin Prison, The Thermals, French Horn Rebellion, and Laura Stevenson. Williamsburg movie theater Nitehawk has also organized a screening series that features classics including Roman Polanski’s Knife in the Water, Saturday Night Fever, and Horror of Dracula. As for the shopping, expect there to be an eclectic mix of over 40 vendors a night. Also cycling in will be live tattooists, a palm reader, stilt walkers and hula hoop performers.

The festivities at Brooklyn Night Bazaar get underway tonight with a concert by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and continue tomorrow with a show that sees Pissed Jeans, Surfbort and Nap take to the stage. For additional information and tickets go here.
