A supergroup consisting of Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy’s Will Oldham, Emmett Kelly of The Cairo Band, and Angel Olsen are releasing an album of Mekons covers. The band call themselves the Chivalrous Amoekons, and their album, Fanatic Voyage, is due out September 16 via Drag City imprint Sea Note. The record is available for pre-order now.

The lineup of the Chivalrous Amoekons may sound familiar, as the group is made up of Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy’s band of 2012. In addition to Oldham, Kelly and Olsen, other bandmates include Danny Kiely, Ben Boye, and Van Campbell. The idea for the Mekons record began germinating during the band’s European Tour. In addition to performing Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy tunes, the group began playing a set of Mekons covers. The recordings from those shows have been mastered in the style of Lou Reed’s Street Hassle, and will be out in September. Proceeds from the sale of Fanatic Voyage go to Roots of Music, a New Orleans-based group that empowers local youth through music education, academic support and mentorship. You can pre-order the record at the Drag City website.
