DELQA: Immersive Installation To Take Visitors Inside the Music of Matthew Dear

Matthew Dear Delqa New Museum New IncWe’ve all listened to music, but what if we could actually get inside the songs of our favorite musicians? That’s what DELQA is all about. A revolutionary immersive installation, DELQA is built around the music of acclaimed artist Matthew Dear and will be on display in the Lower East Side for four days starting August 6.

Using Microsoft’s Kinect technology, DELQA surrounds visitors with sounds and visuals that react to audience movements and interactions. Working closely with Dear, a group of artists, designers, and developers from the New Museum’s incubator NEW INC created the environment that seeks to blurs the lines between creator and audience.

An avid futurist and boundary pusher, Dear is is constantly evolving and reinventing music through his work as a DJ, producer and experimental pop artist. He co-founded Ghostly International and its dancefloor offshoot, Spectral Sound, and has been commissioned to remix the likes of The XX, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Spoon, The Postal Service, and Chemical Brothers. A man of many musical faces, Dear maintains four very distinct aliases: Audion, False, Jabberjaw, and Matthew Dear.

In speaking about the project, Dear has said “I wanted to compose a sonic dreamscape, fully realizing that dreams are weird and not always black and white.” He continued, “The music rests between peaceful and chaotic states, allowing the listener to come up with their own story while engaging with the piece.”

DELQA will inhabit the first floor of the NEW INC Studio, which is adjacent to the New Museum. Hours are August 6-9, Thursday and Friday 11am-9pm, Saturday and Sunday 11am-6pm. Visitors must RSVP through the DELQA website, http://www.delqa.is/, in order to attend.
