Rooftop Films Announces Free Screening of Flying Lotus’ ‘KUSO’ at House of Vans, RSVP Open

Just when we thought Rooftop Films 2017 series couldn’t get anymore amped-up, the programmers up and add a free sneak preview of Flying Lotus’ KUSO to the lineup. Taking place next Tuesday (July 11) at House of Vans, the screening event includes a Q&A with Flying Lotus (aka Steve Ellison) and an after-party sponsored by Goose Island and Tanqueray with music by special guest DJs. To get in on the festivities, you just need to RSVP and show up early.

KUSO caused quite a stir when it premiered in the Sundance Film Festival’s Midnight section earlier this year. Inspiring some viewers to walk out due to its graphic content, Ellison’s film has been described as a hallucination that crosses David Cronenberg and Ren & Stimpy. The story centers around the aftermath of Los Angeles’ worst earthquake and stars George Clinton, Tim Heidecker (Tim & Eric’s Awesome Adventure, Decker), Hannibal Buress (The Eric Andre Show), David Firth, and Anders Holm (Workaholics, The Mindy Project). You can check out the trailer below.

The addition of KUSO comes at the midway point of Rooftop Films’ 2017 season. The series, which runs through August 19, brings first-rate indie cinema paired with live music to rooftops across the city. Films that have already screened include Noël Wells’ comedic charmer Mr. Roosevelt, Zoe Lister-Jones’ Band Aid, Dave McCary’s wondrous Brigsby Bear, and The Big Sick, a comedy based on the real-life courtship between comedian Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon (now in theaters). Still to come are The Incredible Jessica James starring Jessica Williams (The Daily Show), Joshua Z. Weinstein’s Menashe, Animation Block Party, Dmitrii Kalashnikov’s bizarre dash-cam compilation video The Road Movie, and Eliza Hittman’s Beach Rats. To find out more visit the Rooftop Films website.

As for KUSO, to RSVP just go to the House of Vans website. If you miss out on this screening, it will also be playing at the Nitehawk Cinema. Come July 21, it will be in theaters in Los Angeles and available nationwide at shudder.com.
