Free Things to Do in NYC Labor Day Weekend 2015: Coney Island Fireworks, Governors Island Art Fair, Get Summered, Arty BBQ & more


Labor Day is here and rather than mourn, we’re working with it the best we know how, by finding fun free things to do. This weekend’s picks include an art show at Governors Island, fireworks, a musical adaptation of The Odyssey, seaside parties and more.

Friday, September 4
NYC free events Labor Day 2015 Rose WongART: Rose Wong: Consider Death
Illustrator Rose Wong is getting a solo show at cool Boerum Hill shop/art gallery Grumpy Bert. Be among the first to check it out at the opening reception, which will hopefully include some sort of free liquid refreshment.

PERFORMANCE: Bryant Park Shakespeare: The Taming of the Shrew
There is more of The Bard to be had in Bryant Park. The Drilling Company’s last production of the summer is one of Shakespeare’s earlier comedies, The Taming of the Shrew. It will be performed Friday and Saturday nights & Sunday afternoons from September 4-20.

PERFORMANCE: Public Works: The Odyssey
The Delacorte Theater in Central Park plays host to one last production this weekend, Public Works’ musical adaptation of The Odyssey. Directed by Lear Debessonet with music and lyrics by Todd Almond, Public Works’ grand reimagining of the Greek tragedy features professional actors, community members and special guests. Tickets are being distributed in the same manner as the Shakespeare in the Park productions, through virtual and in-person lotteries and by queueing in Central Park.
Time: 8pm, continues through Monday, September 7

SPECTACLE: Coney Island Fireworks
Take in the sea’s breeze and catch the last of this summer’s free Friday fireworks shows in Coney Island.

Saturday, September 5
FESTIVAL: NYC Unicycle Festival
Fans of one-wheelers descend on Governors Island this weekend for two days of unicycle fun. Among the activities planned are races, exhibitions, and a variety of unicycle sports. The event is put together by Bindlestiff Family Variety Arts. Both skilled riders and unicycle virgins are welcome.
Time: 12-5pm, also happening Sunday

ART: Governors Island Art Fair
For the eighth year, the military barracks of Governors Island play host to New York’s largest indie art exhibition. Expect to see work in a wide range for media including painting, photography, sculpture, video, sound art and more.
Time: 11am-6pm (Open Saturday & Sundays every full weekend throughout September)

NYC free events Labor Day Paper JamFESTIVAL: Paper Jam
The small press/zine fair Paper Jam returns this Saturday. The festivities go down at Silent Barn and among the exhibitors you’ll find Jeanette Wall, Matt Crabe, Metropolarity, Lambey Press, Allyssa Yohanna and more.

PARTY: Super Friends BBQ and Party
Secret Project Robot closes out their three-month Summer of Robot Festival with an outdoor soiree featuring music and performance art by Colin Self, Alexandra Drewchin and Greg Fox as GDFX, Dean Anthony Cercone Jr, and many more.

Rockaway’s Locals Surf School is hosting a labor day dance party at cool, hipster bar Rockaway Beach Surf Club. There will be drinks, Tacoway Beach tacos, dancing and more.

SPECTACLE: Post-Cyclones Game Coney Island Fireworks
If you missed the display on Friday, or are just really into fireworks by the ocean, Coney Island has one more show happening this weekend. It will occur after the Cyclones game. The game isn’t free, but it is a great summertime activity. Another fun not free happening in Coney Island on Saturday is the 8th Annual Coney Island Beard And Moustache Competition.

MUSIC: The Mystery Lights 45 Release Party
It’s a free psych/garage rock show for your Saturday night. Going down at the awesome new Bushwick hang Our Wicked Lady, the party features The Mystery Lights, who have a 7″ coming out via Daptone Records. Also performing are Collin J. Rocker & The Burning Barrels and Worthless, with dj sets by Mikey Post and Frog Bois.

NYC Free events Labor Day Rockaway Summer ArtPARTY: Get Summered and Rockaway Summer Hive Issue 3-D Launch Party/Art Exhibit
Get your summer fun on at Jacob Riis this Sunday. Get Summered are providing party vibes and seaside tunes with DJs Big Vic, Dirtyfinger and Smudge. plus a live performance by Raycee Jones. Over at the art deco bathhouse, there’s an art show organized by Rockaway Summer Hive magazine. The exhibit celebrates the release of their 3-D issue, and features art work by both local and international artists. Live painting by Tracey Greene gets underway at 1pm.

FILM: Movie Night: Pulp Fiction
After your day at the beach, head over to Rockaway’s lush tropical hideaway The Palms for a screening of Pulp Fiction. Feel free to BYOB. Jerk chicken will be available for purchase.

Monday, September 7
FESTIVAL: Caribbean Carnival
Costume bands, masqueraders, moko jumbos, and more bring the caribbean spirit to the streets of Crown Heights. This annual event is always one of the summer’s most colorful and exciting celebrations and also features food, arts and crafts and more. The parade comes at the end of a 4-day string of events organized by the West Indian American Day Carnival Association (WIADCA).

FILM: Wet Hot American Labor Day
Spend the unofficial end of summer catching up with Coop, McKinley and the gang at Camp Firewood on their last day camp in 1981. Videology is bringing out David Wain’s 2001 film Wet Hot American Summer and playing it in an endless loop starting at 2pm on Labor Day. The cult classic’s cast includes Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Molly Shannon, Paul Rudd, Christopher Meloni, Michael Showalter, Marguerite Moreau, Ken Marino, Michael Ian Black, Bradley Cooper, Amy Poehler, Elizabeth Banks and more.
