Frieze New York
May 5-8, Thu & Sat 11am – 7pm, Fri 11am-8pm, Sun 11am-6pm
at Randall’s Island
Tickets: $10-$99
Firmly planted at the center of Frieze Week is Frieze New York. Back at Randall’s Island for its fifth year, the British import art fair pulls focus on the contemporary art scene, parading the work of today’s hottest commodities. Housed in a temporary serpentine structure imagined by Brooklyn-based architects SO-IL, the 2016 edition runs four days and plays host to over 200 galleries from 31 countries. Among Frieze’s distinguishing characteristics are its commissioned site-specific programs Frieze projects and Frieze sound. This year, nine artists were enlisted to participate including Giorgio Andreotta Calò, Maurizio Cattelan, Alex Da Corte, GCC, Anthea Hamilton, David Horvitz, Liz Magic Laser, Eduardo Navarro, and Heather Phillipson. Fair goers should be on the look out for Alex Da Corte’s balloon work that will be hovering over the fair, Anthea Hamilton’s futuristic inhabitable car, and Cattelan’s tribute to Daniel Newburg Gallery that features a live donkey.

Another signature of the fair is Frieze Talks. An opportunity to hear from influential artists, critics and cultural figures, the 2016 series finds Eileen Myles, Jacolby Satterwhite, Turner Prize-winning artist Mark Leckey, and Thomas Demand among its speakers.

New for 2016 is the Reading Room at Frieze. This space houses the world’s best arts and culture publications and also serves up daily events featuring writers, editors and special guests. Highlights of the programming include a conversation with Petra Cortright on the relationship between art and the internet, a poetry reading by Wayne Koestenbaum, and W Magazine’s Art Heist, which finds illustrator Justin Teodoro creating artwork that is being given away for free.

And, if all the art shopping at Frieze has you building up an appetite, the fair always has a plethora of food options. Among this year’s vendors are Court Street Grocers, Marlow & Sons, Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream, Frankies Spuntino, Roberta’s, Cosme, Superiority Burger, and more.
