James Gray’s ‘The Lost City of Z’ to Close 54th New York Film Festival

James Gray’s ‘The Lost City of Z’ to Close 54th New York Film Festival

NYFF Closing Night Film 2016The trifecta is complete. The Film Society of Lincoln Center today announced that James Gray’s The Lost City of Z will close out the 54th New York Film Festival. Gray’s film, which will have its world premiere at the festival, joins previously announced films, Ava DuVernay’s The 13th, and Mike Mills’ 20th Century Women, as the event’s main anchors. DuVernay’s racial inequality documentary is opening night, while Mill’s comedy serves as the centerpiece.

The Lost City of Z is a period adventure/drama that James Gray adapted for the screen from David Grann’s book. It stars Charlie Hunnam as Lieutenant Colonel Percy Fawcett, a British explorer who sets off into the Amazon in search of a lost city. The film’s cast also includes Sienna Miller, Robert Pattinson and Tom Holland. Brad Pitt and Marc Butan are executive producers.

This will be Gray’s second appearance at the New York Film Festival. His 2014 film The Immigrant screened in the main slate of the 51st edition.

From the three films announced, the festival’s selection committee appears to be changing things up for 2016. Take for example the opening night film, it’s breaking all sorts of new ground. Ava DuVernay’s The 13th is not only the first documentary and first film by a black female director to open the festival, but its also the first from Netflix. It is very much a sign of the times. As for the centerpiece slot, Mills could be considered a lightweight in comparison to recent centerpiece filmmakers Danny Boyle (Steve Jobs) and Paul Thomas Anderson (Inherent Vice). The festival is also taking a slightly different tack with its closer. The three previous years showcased upbeat fare, including Don Cheadle’s Miles Ahead, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Academy Award-winning Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), and Spike Jonze’s Her. Gray’s The Lost City of Z is described as being “exquisitely pitched between rapture and dizzying terror.”

This year’s selection committee is chaired by Kent Jones, and also includes Dennis Lim, FSLC Director of Programming; Florence Almozini, FSLC Associate Director of Programming; Amy Taubin, Contributing Editor, Film Comment and Sight & Sound; and Gavin Smith, who serves as a consultant.

The main slate for the 54th New York Film Festival, which runs September 30-October 16, should be announced in the coming days. Tickets for the 17-day event go on sale September 11. For more information visit the festival’s website.
