Kevin Morby Previewed ‘City Music’ at Bowery Ballroom (Pics, Videos, Setlist), Next Stop, Europe

Kevin Morby kicks off the first of two festival gigs in Europe amid his “City Music” world tour today with an appearance at Primavera Sound. To celebrate, the folk rocker shared “1234”, which you can listen to below. It’s the third single he’s shared off his new record City Music (due out June 16). We had the chance to catch Morby last week when he played to a sold-out crowd at Bowery Ballroom in New York City. You can find photos, videos and the setlist from the show below.

Morby took to the stage last Wednesday decked out in a white suit adorned with musical notes, his initials on the lapels, and the words “City Music” on the back. Wasting no time getting into songs off the new album, he launched the show with “City Music”, which, of the new songs performed, was clearly one of the strongest off the album. It’s a slow starter that’s light on lyrics, but sports a killer guitar riff. From there, he tested the waters by playing three other new songs in succession, “Cry Baby”, “1234”, which contains nods to the Ramones and Jim Carroll, and “Aboard My Train”. He then peppered the set with a few familiar songs, including “Destroyer” and crowd favorite “Harlem River”. He remarked that this was a special show, recalling a previous gig he played at the venue years back with his old band Woods, and explaining how he has always wanted to headline there with his own project.

Considering the crowd hadn’t heard much of the new music before, they were enthusiastic about the material. The last of the new tunes played was album closer, “Downtown’s Lights”, which you can watch him perform below.

For the tour, Morby’s band consists of Meg Duffy (aka Hand Habits) on guitar and keyboards, Cyrus Gengras on bass, and Nick Kinsey on drums. It appears Morby’s longtime collaborator/drummer Justin Sullivan is sitting this one out.

Towards the end of the set, Morby bid farewell to the band and performed “Beautiful Strangers”, a song that when first released paid tribute to the victims in the Pulse nightclub shooting. On this occasion, he dedicated it to Manchester. He followed it up with a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Tonight I’ll Be Staying Here With You cover” in honor of the bard’s birthday (see below). Previously, Morby had recorded this song for Aquarian Drunkard’s Lagniappe Sessions. You can find out more about that here.

The encore found John Andrews, whose band John Andrews & the Yawns opened the show, joining in on “Cut Me Down”. And, for the final song of the evening, Sam Cohen, who produced Morby’s Singing Saw, stepped in to assist with a cover of the Velvet Underground’s “Rock and Roll”, which lit up the crowd, and was a definite highlight of the evening. You can check out the performance below.

Morby continues to tour through November 22. After the two shows in Europe, he returns to the US to play Bonnaroo and Wilco’s Solid Sound Festival later this month. City Music is due out June 16 via Dead Oceans and is available for pre-order here now. You can check out previously released tracks “Aboard the Train” and “Come to Me Now”, here and here, respectively.
