Lee Ranaldo & Steve Gunn Close Tour with Mems. of Yo La Tengo, Cover The Velvet Underground (Watch)

Steve Gunn and Lee Ranaldo closed out their solo co-headlining tour last night with a sold out show at the Park Church Co-Op in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. We aren’t usually the church-going sort, but catching these fine troubadours in an ecclesiastical setting was just what the doctor ordered given the state of current events. Toward the end of Ranaldo’s set, Gunn, and Yo La Tengo’s Georgia Hubley and Ira Kaplan joined him on stage by for a rousing cover of the Velvet Underground’s Ocean. Ranaldo has covered the song on multiple occasions, but last night it had more heft. You can check it out below.

The Gunn/Ranaldo tour, which began January 10 at the Arts at the Armory in Somerville, MA, allowed the musicians a chance to play both new and older material, as well as collaborate. Gunn had a rigorous tour schedule in 2016. He made the rounds with his band the Outliners in support of his stellar Matador debut Eyes on the Lines. Ranaldo has been working on a new album and used the tour to preview a few songs. Drag City, San Francisco-based musician Meg Baird joined as the tour opener.

Ranaldo is performing at Sincerely, L. Cohen: A Celebration of Leonard Cohen at Music Hall of Williamsburg tomorrow night. You can find out more about that show here.

As for Gunn, he just announced a solo tour of UK/EU. Find dates below. He also produced Michael Chapman’s 50, which is out now via Paradise of Bachelors. It’s streaming over at Stereogum.
