Marina Abramović Brazil Doc Gets Worldwide Release, Screens in NYC Tonight With the Artist Present

Marina Abramović, who turned 70 at the end of last month, is taking her new septuagenarian status in stride. The performance artist recently published a memoir, orchestrated a fabulous birthday bash for herself at the Guggenheim, and is preparing for the worldwide Vimeo release of Marina Abramović in Brazil: The Space in Between, a documentary about her journey through spiritual Brazil. The last of these to dos, the release of the film, takes place today. To mark the occasion, Abramović will be at the Museum of the Moving Image tonight for a screening of the doc followed by a conversation. Tickets are still available.

For those just catching up now on the art world diva’s birthday party antics, the spectacle went down last Thursday (December 8) and doubled as a launch event for her memoir, Walk Through Walls. We weren’t in attendance (our invitation must have gotten lost in the mail), but according to Slate, the evening kicked off with 70 minutes of silence where revelers were asked to wear noise canceling headphones. At the completion of this portion of the event, Abramović descended to read a speech and a portion of her memoir. Then, Anohni, who was dressed in a black hooded cloak, performed “My Way” in the museum’s rotunda. Throughout the event, guests were invited to adorn their lips with gold leaf. Among those in attendance were friends of the artist and members of the arts/entertainment community including Naomi Campbell, Bella Hadid, Ladyfag, Rose Lee Goldberg, and Daniel Lismore.

Marina Abramović in Brazil: The Space in Between

As for the new documentary about Abramović, which is available to stream on Vimeo starting at 10am ET today, the film follows the artist as she travels through Brazil experiencing sacred rituals and exploring the limits between art and spirituality. Helmed by director Marco Del Fiol, the film is described as a combination of road movie and spiritual thriller. It premiered at SXSW earlier this year and has been enjoying screenings all over the world. Today, you can either purchase it on Vimeo or head to the Museum of the Moving Image at 7pm for a screening and discussion with Abramović, Del Fiol, producer Minom Pinho and Carl Swanson of New York magazine. Tickets are available here and the trailer is below.

If you miss out on Abramović’s appearance this evening, in the new year, she’ll be doing a talk at the 92nd Street Y followed by a signing of her memoir. Tickets for this event, which takes place January 25, 2017, are available here.
