8 Events to Celebrate National Ice Cream Month in NYC


Ice cream gets its due this month. Back in 1984, President Ronald Reagan made a very bipartisan proclamation that designated July as National Ice Cream Month, with the third Sunday of the month have the distinction of being National Ice Cream Day. Given the occasion, as well as this summer heat, we’ve taken an inventory of all the awesome frozen treat-inspired events coming up this month in New York City. Black Tap milkshakes

Tap That: Milkshake Party with Black Tap Shakes and Caper
Babeland and Caper are teaming up for this party that promises “to satisfy your sweet and sexy tooth.” Lucky guests will feast on Black Tap’s over-the-top milkshakes, which come drenched in toppings like whole slices of cake and chocolate chip cookies, while getting tips on how to spice things up in the bedroom. One lucky reveler will also walk away with a $250 gift basket.

Ice Cream Social with Beer Floats
Long Island City nano-brewery Big Alice Brewing is hosting a good old fashion ice cream social complete with movies, ice cream by OddFellows and beer floats. Watch classics like The Sandlot or Heavyweights while sipping on Jalapeño Rye with a scoop of Jalapeño Grapefruit Sorbet, or Sour One with OddFellows’ Miso Cherry.

Ice Cream Battle
Historic gastronomist Sarah Lohman delves into the origins of ice cream during this class hosted at MOFAD Lab. Among the topics covered are long lost flavors, and which came first: the ice cream sandwich or the ice cream cone, as well as a head-to-head face off between chocolate and vanilla. Tastings of Häagen-Dazs are also party of the evening’s curriculum.

Hester Street Fair Presents: Ice-cream Social
Hester Street Fair is piling it on in honor of National Ice Cream Day. For this celebration, which takes place the day before the official holiday, a special lineup of local ice cream and a batch of brand new ice cream and frozen treat vendors will be serving up their cold creamy stuff. Among those scooping include Black Tree, Ice & Vice, J-Rock’s Excellent Ice Cream, Mikey Likes It, Noona’s, Sweetface Snoballs, Penguin Ice Cream, and more. You can purchase a $10 sampling ticket that allows you to sample them all and vote on your favorite.

Brooklyn Flea’s Ice Cream Bonanza
The folks at the Brooklyn Flea have certainly been busy this summer with all sorts of expansion plans in the works. But, thankfully, they aren’t too busy to celebrate one of the dishiest holidays on the calendar, National Ice Cream Day. The Brooklyn Flea is reprising their Ice Cream Bonanza, a two-day fête that takes place at the fleas in Fort Greene and Dumbo. This year’s vendors include Blue Marble Ice Cream, Brooklyn Bell Foods & Co., Fort Grace Ice Cream & Sweet Shop, The Good Batch, Malai Ice Cream, and Underwest Donuts.

Takedown maestro Matt Timms invites you take the edge off the summer heat at this annual frosty competition. Citizen creamers will be whipping up their most favor-filled concoctions for patrons to sample and vote on. Expect some pretty outlandish offerings ranging from the fruity to the alcoholic to the savory. Past winners have included absinthe chocolate chip, Hojicha with Blueberry Basil Granita, and caprese freeze, which consists of layers of tomato, marscapone and basil ice creams.

Brooklyn Screams for Ice Cream
Brooklyn’s top ice cream makers are gathering for panel discussion that explores the history, mechanics and future of all things ice cream. Among the participants are Sarah Lohman, ice cream historian Laura Weiss, and representatives from Ample Hills and Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream. Samples will be provided.
