‘Patti Cake$’, ‘Person to Person’ Highlight New Directors/New Films 2017 Slate, Tickets on Sale This Week

Cinephiles, when you’re ready to move on from the bizarre ending to awards season (seriously, WTF?!?), we suggest turning your gaze to the filmmakers that New Directors/New Films deems the future of cinema. Tickets for the 46th annual fete, which runs March 15-26, go on sale this week, and if the 2017 edition is anything like year’s past, you’ll want to act quick. Among this year’s selections are plus-size Sundance hit Patti Cake$, the charming Hasidic drama Menashe, and The Last Family, Jan P. Matuszynski’s black comedy about Polish artist Zdzisław Beksiński. You’ll find the complete list below.

ND/NF, a co-production of the Museum of the Modern Art and the Film Society of Lincoln Center, is one of the most vital events on New York City’s film calendar. Sandwiched between Rendez-Vous with French Cinema and the Tribeca Film Festival, the fest showcases bold new voices in cinema making the rounds on the international film festival circuit. This year’s class, which draws heavily from Locarno, Sundance, and Cannes, rates an A for authenticity. According to MoMA film curator Raj Roy, the filmmakers selected “share a common commitment to honest personal vision and integrity in storytelling.”

The slate, which is comprised of 29 features and nine shorts, is a mix of narrative, non-fiction and experimental. In addition to the films mentioned above, other highlights include Georgian drama My Happy Family, Turkish filmmaker Mehmet Can Mertoglu’s social satire Albüm, Yance Ford’s intimate documentary about his brother’s death, Strong Island, and theater director William Oldroyd’s debut feature Lady Macbeth, which takes Nikolai Leskov’s novel and relocates it to Victorian England. The festival closes with Person to Person, a New York slice-of-life comedy starring Abbi Jacobson, Michael Cera, and Tavi Gevinson.

Tickets for ND/NF go on sale to the general public on Thursday, March 2 at noon. If you’re a member of MoMA or the Film Society of Lincoln Center, you can get a jump on things, with an early access sale that begins Monday, February 27 at noon. For more information about the films, check below and for schedule or ticket information visit the festival website.
