Shhhh…Dîner en Blanc New York Date Announced, Registration Begins

You’ve heard of BYOB, but have you heard of BYOTCLPSBFB? Because that’s what you get if you’re able to score a ticket to the super chic and super secret Dîner en Blanc. Originating in Paris, Dîner en Blanc is an annual outdoor flash-mob style dinner where everyone dresses in white and is required to bring their own tables, chairs, linens, plates, silverware, basket, food and beverage. The event has been going strong in Paris for over 25 years and has now become a worldwide phenomenon. The first New York dinner took place at the World Financial Center Plaza (now Brookfield Place) in 2011. This year’s event is slated for July 28th.

Diner en Blanc New York 2015 New York City’s 2014 spectacle hosted approximately 4,000 guests, and this year’s gathering has increased to 5,000. The event’s location is always a surprise. Those that have registered are given the coordinates of where to meet one of the dinner’s team leaders. The leader then escorts them to the final destination. In addition to the World Financial Center Plaza, dinners have taken place at Bryant Park, Lincoln Center, and Battery Park City’s Nelson Rockefeller Park.

The dress code is non-negotiable. However, you’d be surprised how creative folks can get with a single color. In year’s past, white attire has come in all shapes and sizes including ball gowns, boas, capes and wigs.

We mentioned that you need to bring your own everything, but for the second year, four-time James Beard Award winner Todd English is curating a selection of menus that can be ordered for the big day. Last year, the multi-course meals were made for two and ranged in price from $70-$90. In the beverage department, Perrier-Jouët is the Official Champagne partner in New York, and Apothic Wines is the Official Wine partner of the 2015 U.S. Dîner en Blanc series.

You may think that since you are bringing everything the event should be free, but there are costs associated with putting something like this together. The organizers need to secure permits, bring in lights, hire security, etc. Also, in past years they’ve set up a sound system and have had French-themed musical entertainment and DJs.

By now, you’re probably wondering how you can in on this magical, something-to-tell-the-grandkids experience. Tickets can be difficult to come by and are released in phases. We recommend trying to find someone who has been before to sponsor you (work those social media channels), or register pronto on the Dîner en Blanc website. The first release of tickets go to people who have been to the event before. They can purchase starting June 30 at 3pm ET. The next phase of registration is for people who know people who have been before, and then if any tickets remain, they are offered up to those on the waiting list. An email from the organizers will let you know when and if tickets are available. This year, tickets run $32, plus a one-time membership fee of $8.

If you still aren’t sold on Dîner en Blanc, see below for the official video from last year’s event. It’s pretty damn spectacular.
