‘Twin Peaks: The Return’, ‘The Square’, ‘Lady Bird’ & More Added to MoMA’s The Contenders

We hope you’ve been playing along, because the 2017 edition of The Contenders, MoMA’s series that assembles the best and most buzzed about films of the year, has been stacked. Coming to close January 12, the museum just released the remaining titles screening in the program, among them are Twin Peaks: The Return screening over the course of three days, Ruben Östlund’s Palme D’Or-winning film The Square, James Mangold’s Logan, Oscar Foreign-Language frontrunner Loveless, and Lady Bird, which is followed by a Q&A with Greta Gerwig. Advance tickets for many of the films are on sale now. A complete list of what’s coming up is below.

The Contenders is no doubt one of our favorite film series of the year. Not only does it allow us to get caught up on films we might have missed, but it also features advance screenings of soon-to-be released films and hosts post-screening discussions with filmmakers and cast members. Highlights of this year’s series have included Guillermo del Toro stopping in to talk about The Shape of Water, Sean Baker getting grilled about The Florida Project, and Darren Aronofsky decoding mother!. Allison Janney was also present for a screening of I, Tonya, and Alexander Payne fielded questions about Downsizing.

Tickets for most screenings go on sale two weeks prior to each film’s screening date and are free for members and $12 for non-members. For Twin Peaks, the series’ screenings are free and open to the public, but a separate screening ticket is required for each date. Please note, admission to these screenings may close if attendance reaches maximum capacity. Advance tickets for the Twin Peaks screenings will be available, but there will be a service charge.
