The 40-Year-Old Virgin

One the great comedic architects working in the entertainment industry today, Apatow has had his hand in some of the most beloved film and television projects of the last 25 years. His early TV credits include The Ben Stiller Show, for which he won an Emmy, Garry Shandling’s The Larry Sanders Show, and Freaks and Geeks. In the oughts, he moved into film and wrote, directed and produced the smash hit The 40-Year-Old Virgin. His later movies include Knocked Up, and This is 40. As a producer, Apatow worked on Superbad, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Bridesmaids, and Girls, among others. And, Sick in the Head, a collection of interviews he’s done with comedians over the last 30 years, is currently on The New York Times bestseller list.

Apatow frequently collaborates with the same group of actors. When the network cancelled Freaks and Geeks he made it his own personal mission to make the cast famous. We’d say he did a pretty damn good job given that James Franco, Seth Rogen, and Jason Segel are virtually household names now. Rogen even flirted with sex symbol status as a result of Knocked Up, which is nothing short of miraculous. Apatow is clearly gifted. Other actors in his stable include Jonah Hill and Paul Rudd.

There is much to see in FSLC’s mini homage to the auteur, which runs July 10-14. All of Apatow’s directorial outings are screening, as well as a handful of his producer credits. Apatow’s fondness for Hal Ashby is celebrated with screenings of Being There and The Last Detail, and a full-on free marathon of Freaks and Geeks is happening Saturday and Sunday (7/11 & 7/12). As a warm up to the big world premiere of Trainwreck, Apatow will sit down for a conversation with Lena Dunham. For a complete schedule of all the events and screenings happening in I Found This Funny: The Comedy World of Judd Apatow, visit the FSLC website.
