Yo La Tengo Blamed for Apocalypse in Video for Cover of The Cure’s ‘Friday I’m in Love’

Yo La Tengo are at the center of a worldwide apocalypse in a new video for their cover of The Cure’s “Friday I’m in Love”. The video heralds the release of the band’s new album, Stuff Like That There, and their Global Destruction Tour.

Directed by Jason Woliner, whose credits include Parks and Recreation, Human Giant, and The Last Man on Earth, the video features band member Georgia Hubley as a person of interest in the planet’s destruction. As she wanders the streets singing The Cure’s lyrics and picking up small sculptures, mysterious exploding hearts fall from the sky, wreaking mass havoc. After most of humanity has been wiped out, the survivors decide to rid Friday from the calendar and find nourishment in batteries. You can check out the video below. It premiered on NPR earlier today.

Yo La Tengo Cure Cover Stuff Like That There MatadorThe Cure cover is off their new album Stuff Like That There, which drops August 28 via Matador. Inspired by the concept behind their 1990 classic Fakebook, the new record is a mix of cover songs, “covers” of Yo La Tengo songs, and brand new originals. It finds the core band, Hubley, Ira Kaplan, and James McNew, re-teaming with guitarist and former bandmate Dave Schramm. The LP is available for pre-order via Matador, iTunes, Amazon and Google Play. You’ll find the tracklist below.

Following the record’s release the band will be hitting the road. The Global Destruction Tour kicks off September 4 and sees them playing mostly acoustic shows with Kaplan on acoustic guitar, Hubley up-front on a small kit, and McNew on upright bass. Currently, their only New York area stop is in Brooklyn at King’s Theatre, but there are several free evenings surrounding that date, so hopefully another show will be announced. See their full tour schedule below.
