Abramović’s Former Partner Ulay to Perform With JAŠA in NYC During Frieze Week

If you went to Marina Abramović’s 2010 MoMA retrospective, then you are familiar with Ulay (real name Frank Uwe Laysiepen). A pioneer of performance art, the West German artist met Abramović in 1976 and the duo were lovers and collaborators for the following 12 years. They engaged in works that involved them being tied together by their hair, locking mouths and breathing each other’s exhaled breath, and screaming continuously at each other at close range. When their relationship ended, they marked the occasion by performing The Lovers, The Great Wall Walk, a work that found them walking from opposing ends of the Great Wall of China until they met in the middle and said goodbye. The pair had an emotional reunion during Abramović’s MoMA retrospective, however last year things turned ugly as Ulay launched a lawsuit against Abramović saying she violated a 1999 contract they both signed regarding works they created together.

Now, Ulay, whose most recent work has focused on environmental issues, is coming to Abramović’s home turf to be part of a site-specific installation and performance curated by Mitra Khorasheh entitled Watermark/Cutting Through the Clouds of Myth. The exhibition, which is the artist’s first in New York City in 30 years, sees him collaborating with Slovenian artist JAŠA. JAŠA is known for transforming spaces into experiences. His most recent work, UTTER/The violent necessity for the embodied presence of hope, was produced for the Venice Biennial and received much acclaim.

Watermark/Cutting Through the Clouds of Myth is said to be an experiential installation that’s intended result is optimistic consciousness and a dialogue of togetherness. It will be on view from May 6 to June 1, 2016 at Kustera Projects in Red Hook, Brooklyn with a special three-day opening reception performance by the artists on May 6, 7, and 8 from 6-10pm. Performances will also take place sporadically within the installation throughout the duration of the three-day opening, and on May 7, Ulay will do an exclusive performance of WaterMark. To attend any of the evening performances, RSVP here.

Following their performances at Kustera Projects, Ulay and JAŠA are doing a talk moderated by Dr. Kathy Battista at Sotheby’s Institute on Monday, May 9 at 6pm. The event is free, but RSVP is a must. Go here to sign up.
