Blondie Played Brooklyn House of Vans (Photos), Final Vans House Parties Series Continues

Blondie let down their hair last Friday for a rollicking set at House of Vans in Brooklyn. Part of the venue’s final Vans House Parties series, the show found Debbie Harry leading the crowd in a massive sing along as the group performed a mix of classics, covers and songs off their recent album Pollinator. You’ll find photos from the show as well as the setlist below.

The O.G. new wave punk rockers were a surprise addition to this summer’s Vans House Parties series, as their appearance was only revealed a couple of weeks ago and the RSVP promptly filled up. The band topped a bill that included Liz Phair and Cherry Glazerr’s Sasami Ashworth’s new solo project SASAMI. Additionally, a selection of photography by Blondie guitarist Chris Stein was on exhibit at the space. The photos, which capture New York City’s 1970s punk heyday, will also be featured in Stein’s upcoming book Point of View: Me, New York City, and the Punk Scene. The monograph will be out October 16 via Rizzolli.

Not the youngsters they once were, Blondie still powered through their hour-plus-long set. Harry wore a striking pink outfit, first appearing with sunglasses and a jacket that had the words “Stop Fucking the Planet” written on the back. The lead singer had fun with the crowd, making quips between songs, turning her microphone on the audience, and encouraging people to move to the music. The group’s longtime drummer Clem Burke, who was positioned behind a drum screen, upped the band’s showmanship with his drumstick twirls and tosses, and guitarist Tommy Kessler demonstrated his shredding prowess during the guitar solo on “Atomic”. The band performed against a backdrop of stunning live stage projections by Rob Roth.

Blondie continue to tour into the fall. You can find the group’s tour schedule here.

As for the Brooklyn venue’s Vans House Parties series, next up is Against Me! with Cherry Glazerr and Taking Meds on August 3. Unfortunately, the RSVP for this show is already full. However, you can still get in on the parties curated by Pennywise (August 10) and Deerhunter (August 18). The RSVPs for these open this week, on July 26 and July 27, respectively.

Also coming up at House of Vans are free screenings of Industrial Accident: The Story of Wax Trax! Records and Skate Kitchen, which are co-hosted by Rooftop Films. You can find out more about these events here.
