Bob Dylan Announces LP, ‘Rough and Rowdy Ways,’ Shares New Song, “False Prophet” (Audio/Lyrics)

At first, it was surprising, but now Bob Dylan is dropping songs like clockwork. At midnight ET, he shared “False Prophet.” However, this time he filled in more of the puzzle. Dylan announced an album of new material, his first in eight years. It’s also his first non-covers record since receiving the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2016. A double LP, Rough and Rowdy Ways is due out June 19 via Columbia Records. “False Prophet” appears on the new record. You can listen to it below. We also did our best to transcribe the lyrics.

For the last six weeks, Dylan has been releasing new songs every three weeks. He started off with his nearly 17-minute, John F. Kennedy assassination-inspired epic, “Murder Most Foul.” Three weeks later, it was his soliloquy, “I Contain Multitudes.” You’ll find both songs on the new album with “Murder Most Foul” getting its own vinyl/disc. Dylan didn’t release the names of the other tracks, but the double LP contains 10 songs and has a total running time of 1 hour and 11 minutes.

The title, Rough and Rowdy Ways, is a nod to “the father of country” Jimmie Rodgers, who died of tuberculosis in 1933 at the age of 35. In 1930, Rodgers released the song “My Rough and Rowdy Ways.” You can listen to it here.

Dylan teased something was coming earlier in the day. He posted a ghoulish image of a skeleton dressed in a suit and top hat holding a gift and a syringe. Behind the skeleton was a shadow of a hanged man. The text accompanying it read: What are you lookin’ at – there’s nothing to see. We now know this is a lyric from “False Prophet.” Following is his Twitter post:

As for “False Prophet,” it’s propelled by bluesy guitar riffs. The lyrics find the artist declaring “I ain’t no false prophet, I just know what I know.” The song’s protagonist defends himself against the charge that he has some sort of connection with God. Dylan is often referred to as a prophet, a label he’s dismissed.

There’s been no word about the status of Dylan’s 2020 summer tour, but it seems safe to say he will cancel it due to the Covid-19 pandemic. His first show is scheduled for June 4 in Bend, Oregon. UPDATE May 12: Due to the pandemic, Dylan has officially cancelled his June/July US tour dates. He posted a note on his website.

You can also listen to “False Prophet” here. The album, Rough and Rowdy Ways, will be available as a 2-disc CD, 2-LP gatefold vinyl, and digital format. You can pre-order or pre-save it now.

False Prophet Lyrics*
Another day without end – another ship going out
Another day of anger – bitterness, and doubt
I know how it happened – I saw it begin
I opened my heart to the world, and the world came in

Hello Mary Lou – Hello Miss Pearl
My fleet-footed guides from the underworld
No stars in the sky shine brighter than you
You girls mean business and I do too

Well, I’m the enemy of treason – the enemy of strife
I’m the enemy of the unlived meaningless life
I ain’t no false prophet – I just know what I know
I go where only the lonely can go

I’m first among equals – second to none
I’m last of the best – you can bury the rest
Bury ’em naked with their silver and gold
Put ’em six feet under and I’ll pray for their souls

What are you lookin’ at? – there’s nothing to see
Just a cool breeze that’s encircling me
Let’s walk in the garden – so far and so wide
We can sit in the shade by the fountain-side

I searched the world over for the Holy Grail
I sing songs of love – I sing songs of betrayal
Don’t care what I drink – I don’t care what I eat
I climbed a mountain of swords on my bare feet

You don’t know me, darlin’ – you never would guess
I’m nothing like my ghostly appearance would suggest
I ain’t no false prophet – I just said what I said
I’m just here to bring vengeance on somebody’s head

Put out your hand – there’s nothing to hold
Open your mouth – I’ll stuff it with gold
Oh you poor devil – look up if you will
The City of God is up there on the hill

Hello stranger – Hello and goodbye
You rule the land, but so do I
You lusty your old mule – you got a poisoned brain
I’ll marry you to a ball and chain

You know darlin’ the kind of life that I live
When your smile meets my smile – something’s got to give
I ain’t no false prophet – nah, I’m nobody’s bride
Can’t remember when I was born, and I forgot when I died
