‘Honeyland’ Documentary Makes Oscar History, Returns to Theaters

Congratulations to Honeyland. You can’t say we didn’t warn you this might happen. The documentary from North Macedonia made Oscar history earlier this week when it was nominated for Best International Feature Film and Best Documentary Feature. For those who haven’t seen the film or need a refresher, it’s returning to theaters this week. Don’t miss the opportunity to see this “bee-utiful” film on a big screen.

Honeyland Documentary Oscar History Directed by Ljubomir Stefanov and Tamara Kotevska, Honeyland achieved several firsts with its Oscar nominations. It’s the first feature film to be nominated for both Best International Feature Film and Best Documentary Feature. It is also the first film from North Macedonia to earn a Best Documentary Feature nomination. And, it is only the second film from North Macedonia to be nominated for an Oscar. Milcho Manchevski’s Before the Rain was nominated in the foreign-language category in 1994. Before 1994, the country fell under Yugoslavia’s submissions for the Academy Awards.

Besides the Oscar nominations, Honeyland is up for the American Society of Cinematographers’ award for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography in Non-Fiction Filmmaking, a Film Independent Spirit Award for Best Documentary, and a PGA Award for Outstanding Producer of Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures. The documentary, which was the most decorated film at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, already has 31 wins under its belt.

Filmed over three years, Honeyland is the story of one woman’s resilience. The documentary follows Hatidze, the last female wild beekeeper living in North Macedonia’s countryside. Hatidze lives with her ailing mother in a deserted village. Then, one day, a family moves in next door, disrupting Hatidze’s peaceful existence.

To find out where Honeyland is playing, visit the film’s website. If you can’t watch it in a theater, it’s streaming on Hulu. Also, the documentary’s website provides other options for in-home viewing.
