Islands to Release Two New Albums on May 13, Share First Singles

Islands new albums 2016Following in the foot steps of such titans as Bruce Springsteen, Guns N’ Roses, and Prince, Islands, the indie rock group fronted by Nick Thorburn, have announced that they will be releasing two new albums on the same day. The records are said to be very different, with one being called Taste and the other Should I Remain Here, At Sea? (a semi-reference to Tarkovsky’s Solaris). Both records are due out May 13 via Thorburn’s Manque Music label and are available for pre-order now. You can check out tracks off of each album below (“Charm Offensive” off Taste, and “Back into It” off Should I Remain Here, At Sea?). A tour is also in the works. (Update: The tour dates, which were posted on Stereogum, can be found below.)

The new records will be the band’s 6th and 7th, with their last release being Ski Mask in 2013. According to a statement on the band’s website, these are two distinct records, with very different sounds. They are described as follows:

“This is not a double album, and these are not twins. These are two very varied collection of songs; one a demented interpretation of pop music, with a focus on synthesizers and drum machines (This one is called Taste), and the other an attempt at rock n’ roll, with live-off-the-floor performances by the foursome. And a tap dancer on one track. (This one is called Should I Remain Here, At Sea?).”

Both albums were recorded in a little studio in Toronto last summer and produced by Thorburn and Evan Gordon. Taste was mixed by Roger Levins and SIRHAS was mixed by Rob Schnapf. Islands’ current lineup is Thorburn, Evan Gordon, Geordie Gordon, and Adam Halferty.

If you pre-order the albums on Islands’ pledge campaign page now, you’ll be able to get involved with the release of the album. They will be posting special behind-the-scenes footage, photos and Q&As so you can get a glimpse into the band’s record-making process. Also, fans who purchase the discounted album bundle on the pledge site will also receive an exclusive bonus mini EP. The pledge campaign store also has some awesome extras available for purchase like rare 7″ records, ultra rare test pressings, signed comics, and more. Your other option is to go the (less fun) iTunes route, with Taste being available for pre-order here, and Should I Remain Here, At Sea? over here.

2016 also marks the 10th anniversary of the band’s full-length debut, Return to the Sea. According to an interview Thorburn did with Vulture, Islands plans to do a big reissue of the record in the fall. Something else for Islands fans to look forward to.
