Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy Guests on Debut of The Second City Variety Series for Topic

Move over SNL, The Second City is launching its own social distancing sketch comedy show. According to Deadline, the improvisational theatre troupe that launched the careers of Bill Murray, Stephen Colbert, Tina Fey, John Candy, Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, and Steve Carell, among many others, is putting together a half-hour sketch and variety limited series that will stream on Topic. The first episode of The Second City Presents: The Last Show Left on Earth bows Thursday, April 16, with host Jack McBrayer (30 Rock) and featured guest Wilco frontman, Jeff Tweedy.

Founded in Chicago in 1959, The Second City sparked a comedy revolution. The enterprise later opened theaters in Toronto and Los Angeles, launched training programs, and expanded into television with SCTV, The Second City Presents, and Next Comedy Legend.

The Last Show Left on Earth, co-created by Billy Bungeroth and Liz Kozak, brings together segments filmed remotely by The Second City’s alumni and friends. Expect a mash-up of original sketches, musical performances, animation, and rare footage from The Second City’s vault. Also, the show enlisted Andrew Bird, who has been prolific on social media during the coronavirus crisis, to compose an original theme song.

Jeff Tweedy will be the musical guest on the show’s inaugural episode. In an alternate COVID-19-free universe, Jeff would be in Mississippi tonight with Wilco amid a six-week North American tour. But instead, for the last four weeks, Jeff has been visiting with fans nightly via Instagram Live. As a quarantine morale booster, he and his family created a one-hour made-for-Instagram series called The Tweedy Show. Each episode finds Jeff, Susie, Spencer, and Sammy assembling to tell stories, answer fan questions, and play songs. Beginning this week, and for the foreseeable future, the family will broadcast every night except for Wednesday. You can watch the Tweedy show here at 10pm EDT/9pm CDT/7pm PDT.

Joining Jeff as a special guest on the debut of The Last Show Left on Earth will be Tiger King’s Kelci “Saff” Saffery. The episode will premiere on various social channels on Thursday, April 16, at 9pm ET/6pm PT and will remain up for 24 hours. You can watch the show on The Second City’s Facebook and YouTube, and on Topic’s Facebook and YouTube. Subsequent episodes will be available exclusively on Topic’s streaming platform. UPDATE: If you missed the show, you can watch it below. If you just want Jeff’s performance, you watch that video too. Subsequent episodes are being posted on YouTube.

The hosts for The Second City’s show will change out each week, with Christina Anthony (Mixed-ish) in the driver’s seat for episode two accompanied by musical guest Valerie June. Other show talent includes Edgar Blackmon (Alone Together), John Hartman (The Good Place), London Hughes (To Catch a D*ck), Katie Kershaw (Mrs. Fletcher), Andrew Knox, Kate Lambert (Teachers), Brad Morris (Bombshell, The Good Place), Mike O’Brien (A.P. Bio, SNL), Ian Owens (Shrill), Claudia Michelle Wallace (Shrink, Key & Peele) and Fred Willard (Modern Family, Best in Show).

To tide comedy fans over until the show gets underway, we’ve dug up a vintage clip from the pilot of The Second City’s 149 1/2 Edition starring Steve Carrell. And, for fans of Jeff Tweedy, we’ve included an old Take Away Show presented by La Blogothèque shot at L’Olympia Theatre in Montreal in 2010.
