What to See & Do at Museum Mile Festival 2016

It’s time once again for culture enthusiasts to go the distance, as the Museum Mile Festival returns this Tuesday, June 14. Now in its 38th year, the lively Upper East Side celebration shuts down Fifth Avenue to traffic between 82nd and 105th streets and sees seven of New York City’s preeminent art institutions staying open late and offering free admission.

This year, the festivities kick off with an opening ceremony at The Metropolitan Museum of Art at 5:45pm. At this museum mile stop, must sees include the museum’s fashion exhibit, Manus x Machina: Fashion in the Age of Technology, and Cornelia Parker’s Transitional Object (PsychoBarn) roof installation.

From there, we recommend heading to Cooper Hewitt, The Jewish Museum and the Guggenheim. Cooper Hewitt is currently housing the fifth edition of their design triennial. Entitled Beauty, the truly fascinating show fetes design as a creative endeavor that engages the mind, body, and senses. As for The Jewish Museum, in addition to being able to check out their Isaac Mizrahi exhibit, Mariachi Flor de Toloache is performing in collaboration with Bang on a Can. The Guggenheim is also hosting a musical performance: Alsarah and the Nubatones are performing Nubian/Sudanese inspired East-African Retro-Pop. You’ll also find the museum’s recently unveiled Moholy-Nagy: Future Present exhibit filling Frank Lloyd Wright’s rotunda.

If you still have time for more, hike over to the Museum of the City of New York for Roz Chast: Cartoon Memoirs. The exhibit features more than 200 works that showcase the artist’s keen eye for the absurdities and pleasures of daily life. Neue Galerie is also participating with works from their permanent collection on display. Or, if a dance party is more your style, mosey over to the El Museo del Barrio where you’ll find DJ Mickey Perez spinning Afro Latin disco.

(The Museum Mile Festival happens June 14, 2016 from 6pm-9pm on Fifth Avenue between 82nd Street and 105th Street. For more information visit the event’s website.)
