Must-See Art Happenings This Week in NYC: JR, Photoville, Périphérie, Tokyo Pop Underground & More


The 2019 fall art season has officially begun in New York City, which means openings and art happenings are coming on fast and furious. We’ve done our due diligence and put together a list of events and exhibits we recommend checking out this week. You’ll find Gus Van Sant’s first solo art show in New York City, the opening of Photoville, a warm-up to JR’s show at the Brooklyn Museum, a Japanese infused exhibit at Jeffrey Deitch and more.

Tuesday, September 10

Kader Attia, Reflecting Memory, 2016

Kader Attia conceived this show as a continuation of his recent exhibit at the Hayward Gallery in London, The Museum of Emotion. Through video, sculpture, drawings and an installation of large-scale glass works the French-Algerian artist explores the notion of invisible repair as it relates to coping with ghosts from contemporary history such as slavery, colonialism and genocide. Included in the show is Attia’s 2016 Marcel Duchamp Prize winning film, Reflecting Memory (2016; 46 minutes).

For her inaugural exhibition with Hauser & Wirth, Amy Sherald’s debuts a group of new paintings that reinforce the multiplicities of African-American life.

You’ve likely admired Tom Otterness’s sculptures in the subway. Now you can find them in featured in this comprehensive exhibition that spotlights 40 sculptures and several works on paper from 1996 to 2017.

Good Will Hunting director Gus Van Sant gets his first solo art show in New York City. On display will be a series of large-scale watercolors on stretched linen inspired by his hometown, Los Angeles.

JR: The Chronicles of New York City – Sketches

JR, the artist who last spring imagined the pyramid at the Louvre continued underground, is poised to be the star of New York City’s fall art season. This show at Galerie Perrotin opens a few weeks ahead of the Brooklyn Museum’s JR: Chronicles, the French artist’s largest solo museum exhibition to date. Working in conversation with the Brooklyn Museum exhibit, JR: The Chronicles of New York City – Sketches features excerpts from a photographic mural the artist is creating for the larger show. Also on display at Perrotin will be annotations and cut-outs that illustrate his process, as well as a new documentary film.

It’s back! The photo pop-up fest produced by United Photo Industries returns for 8th year. Camping out in Brooklyn Bridge Plaza, the 2019 edition of Photoville brings together over 80 photo exhibits housed in and around shipping containers. In addition to a heck of a lot of photography, the event also features talks, photo walks, nightly projection shows, Tintype portrait sessions, workshops and more.

Part of the 2019 Crossing the Line Festival, Pierre Huyghe investigates the nature of ritual with his video installation The Host and the Cloud, 2009-2010. The French artist filmed three separate days, the Day of the Dead, Valentine’s Day and May Day at a former ethnographic museum outside of Paris. In the film, a group of people circulate through the museum’s galleries and come in contact with external influences. Please note, it’s for mature audiences only.

Paul Chan: The Bather’s Dilemma

This solo exhibition of American artist Paul Chan is comprised of pneumatic sculptural and moving image works constructed of nylon fabric and powered by industrial fans. As an aside, Chan has the honor of being one of six artists selected by the Guggenheim to curate Artistic License, which is on view now at the museum. Chan is scheduled to speak on that exhibit on October 8.

Be prepared to have your head messed with. Jeppe Hein’s show at 303 consists of installations that challenge our perception of things. In conjunction with this exhibit, Hein’s Breathe With Me, an interactive public art project presented by Jeppe Hein and ART 2030, will take place September 21-24th at the United Nations Headquarters, and September 25th-27th in Central Park, to raise awareness that the air we breathe is part of our connected world and climate.

Mint & Serf and Galerié P38 have teamed up for this pop-up exhibit that showcases artists working on the margins. On display you’ll find independent artist books, rare zines, photography, sculpture, contemporary paintings and drawings by 100 artists. An after-party hosted by Good Peoples follows at 9:30pm at Summer Day and Holy Ground, located at 112 Reade St.

Curated by Tokyo gallerist Shinji Nanzuka, this group show explores the complex history of Japanese contemporary art from the 1960s to present. Artists featured include Makoto Azuma, Haroshi, Akiyoshi Mishima, Masato Mori, Tetsuya Nakamura, Yoshiro Nishi aka Yoshirotten, Toshio Saeki, Hajime Sorayama, Keiichi Tanaami, Makoto Taniguchi, Hiroki Tsukuda, Kazuki Umezawa, Harumi Yamaguchi, and Yuichi Yokoyama.

13 galleries take part in this self-guided afternoon-long event, which serves to highlight some of the new kids in the neighborhood, CANADA, James Cohan, kaufman repetto and Andrew Kreps.
