New ICP Museum Opens on Thursday With Free Admission All Day

A new museum is cozying up to the New Museum on the Bowery. On Thursday, June 23, the International Center of Photography opens the doors on its new downtown exhibition space at 250 Bowery. An exhibit entitled Public, Private, Secret christens the new space, and admission is free on opening day from 10am-6pm.

The opening on Thursday comes a little more than 18 months since the ICP bid farewell to its Midtown gallery at 1133 Avenue of the Americas. The new space has an inviting and open design and features a glass-fronted public space where visitors can attend programs such as lectures and workshops before entering the ticket-required galleries.

As for the inaugural exhibit, Public, Private, Secret explores the very timely topic of privacy in today’s society and studies how contemporary self-identity is tied to public visibility. The show is organized by the institution’s first-ever Curator-in-Residence, Charlotte Cotton, along with ICP Associate Curator Pauline Vermare and Assistant Curator Marina Chao. It features a wide range of historical and contemporary works by artists including Zach Blas, Martine Syms, Natalie Bookchin, Cindy Sherman, Nan Goldin, and Andy Warhol and will remain on view through January 8, 2017. To find out more, visit the exhibition website.

Also of note, accompanying the new exhibit is a curated book experience created by Pittsburgh-based imprint Space Corners. A party celebrating the book will take place at the Museum on Thursday, June 30 from 6:30pm-8:30pm.
