Here we are with another edition of our picks for shows to hit up this week. We have come up with five excellent choices. Fortunately, a few of these won’t put a huge dent in your wallet. However, you may want to show up early to get a good spot. Happy concert going!

Elliott Smith at 50

Littlefield, 635 Sackett Street, Brooklyn NY 11217
Friday, August 9
8:30pm
$8-10
Deeply troubled and extraordinarily talented, Elliot Smith tragically passed away in 2003 at the age of 34. A brilliant lyricist and adept multi-instrumentalist, Smith left us with six studio albums (one released posthumously). On the occasion of what would have been the melancholic musician’s 50th birthday, a group of singer-songwriters are gathering to celebrate Smith with renditions of his songs. Steve Hartlett (Stove, Ovlov), Paige Johnson-Brown, Nick Llobet, and Joanna Sternberg, who recently toured with Conor Oberst in support of her new record Then I Try Some More, are among those slated to perform.

Forest Hill Stadium, 1 Tennis Pl, Forest Hills, NY 11375
Saturday, August 10
6pm
$63.50
My Morning Jacket are only playing four shows this summer. Last week, they played two epic sets at Red Rocks. This weekend they come through New York for a sold out show at the Capitol Theatre and this outdoor gig at Forest Hills Stadium, which surprisingly is not sold out yet. Jim James and gang are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their debut album The Tennessee Fire. On August 2, Darla Records released a deluxe edition of the record that includes all 16 original tracks alongside 16 previously unreleased, lost songs, demo outtakes, alternate versions, and more. If history is any indication, we expect a legendary performance from the reverb-loving quintet. Los Angeles indie rock band Warpaint open.

One of the most anticipated shows of the 2019 SummerStage season, John Darnielle’s indie folk rock outfit Mountain Goats play a free show at East River Park. Currently touring in support of their critically lauded 17th studio LP In League With Dragons (Merge Records), the Mountain Goats played a sold out show at Brooklyn Steel in April. They returned to last month to play The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (see video below). You can count on the much-loved lyricist and his band (bassist Peter Hughes, drummer Jon Wurster and multi-instrumentalist Matt Douglas) performing tracks off the new record as well as a mix of fan favorites.
