Oscilloscope Shares Provocative Trailer Ahead of ‘Madeline’s Madeline’ New York Premiere at BAMcinemaFest (Watch)

The most spectacular trailer of the summer may have just arrived and it isn’t for some CGI-ified major studio release. Rather, it comes from Oscilloscope Laboratories for Josephine Decker’s Madeline’s Madeline. The thumping visual, which you can watch below, puts the tease in teaser trailer. It tantalizes without giving anything away about the film’s plot. Its release comes just ahead of the film’s New York premiere this weekend as the closing night of BAMcinemaFest.

Madeline’s Madeline had its world premiere at Sundance earlier this year, where it screened in the festival’s NEXT section. A highly visceral work, Decker’s film plays out like a psychological thriller. It takes an inside out approach to exploring artistic exploitation combined with mental illness. Without giving too much away, the narrative focuses around Madeline (Helena Howard, in a breakout performance), a troubled teen who seems to find grounding with a physical theater group. The troupe’s artistic director (Molly Parker), takes a shine to Madeline, but it becomes clear her motivations are vampiric in nature. Miranda July is divinely vulnerable as Madeline’s beleaguered mother, and the film employs inventive sound design and camera work. Decker enlisted cinematographer Ashley Connor, who shot Decker’s other feature films, as well as her soul-baring collaboration with Zefrey Throwell, Flames.

As for the trailer, it was directed by Winston Hacking, a Canadian filmmaker and collage artist represented by Flying Lotus’s Brainfeeder Films. Hacking often uses techniques that masquerade as animation in an effort to deceive the viewer’s eyes. He’s worked on a number of music videos including Andy Shauf’s “The Magician”, Flying Lotus’ “Post Requisite”, and Washed Out’s “Burned Out Blues”.

Tickets are still available to Madeline’s Madeline New York premiere at BAMcinemaFest on Saturday, June 30. Decker will be doing a Q&A after the film. If you can’t catch it there, the film is out in theaters in New York on August 10, and Los Angeles on August 17.
