The Flaming Lips Run Into Trouble at Pickathon in the Season 6 Premiere of ‘Portlandia’

IFC has certainly given Portlandia fans a lot to chew on in lead up to the premiere of the show’s sixth season. There was the first look clip in November and the official first trailer back in December (which you can watch below). Then last week, they posted a full episode for fans to ponder. The other day they released a four-part stand-alone web series in conjunction with Subaru promoting the show, and today, we got a snippet of the season’s premiere episode. It was filmed at Pickathon and features The Flaming Lips. You can watch it below.

Back in July, Portlandia descended on Pickathon to shoot the show and give guests that had Thursday Early Entry tickets an experience to tweet home about. We now know that Fred and Carrie were accompanied by the Grammy award-winning band The Flaming Lips. In the clip below, you can see there is some dissension among the band’s members causing them to break into two groups: The Flaming Lips featuring Wayne Coyne, and the More Flaming Lips. When the bands attempt to check in separately at festival, the strict staff (played by Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein) deny the groups access.

As for Pickathon, it is a much-beloved, medium-sized festival that has a very communal feel. Now in its 18th year, the event takes place on Pendarvis Farm in Happy Valley, Oregon, and features a very indie rock cast of characters. The first installment of the lineup for the 2016 edition, which takes place August 5-7, was announced earlier this week and includes Jeff Tweedy, Yo La Tengo, Beach House, Ty Segall & The Muggers, Black Mountain, The Oh Hellos, Patrick Watson, Thee Oh Sees, Dan Deacon, Julia Holter and more. You can find a complete list here as well as ticket information.

To find out what becomes of Fred, Carrie and The Flaming Lips, tune into the premiere of Portlandia’s Season 6 on Thursday, January 21 at 10pm ET/PT.
