Watch the Safdie Brothers and Adam Sandler’s Short Film Follow up to ‘Uncut Gems,’ ‘Goldman v Silverman’

Uncut Gems is not where the broship between filmmakers Benny and Josh Safdie and their leading man Adam Sandler ends. The trio got the band back together to make a short film, Goldman v Silverman. Shot covertly in Times Square, the Uncut Gems post-script finds two street performers — one dressed in all gold, the other in silver — feuding in front of crowds of tourists. You can watch the video below. The Safdies are trying to get the short in theaters to screen on 35mm following Uncut Gems. According to Josh Safdie, Metrograph has already signed on and will start screening the film this weekend. UPDATE: The Safdie brothers will at Metrograph on Saturday, January 18 for the 8:15pm screening of Uncut Gems with Goldman v Silverman in 35mm (tickets).

It appears they shot the film in the last few months. Most people, in the background, are wearing coats, however, you do see the occasional person wearing shorts and a t-shirt. In a scan for clues, there is a poster for the Broadway musical Waitress promoting Jordin Sparks in the lead role. Sparks starred in the show from September 16 to November 24, 2019. And, from the looks of the Vimeo account, the video was posted a week ago. So, that gives a vague timeline.

There is some good character development for a film that’s less than seven minutes. Adam Sandler is cast as Rod Goldman, a tarnished, Phantom-of-the-Opera-mask-wearing performer who has been around the block. Benny Safdie is Al Silverman, a shiny, younger street artist who has no respect for his elders. But Goldman knows how to put whippersnappers in their place.

Miyako Bellizzi, who was the costume designer on Uncut Gems, worked on the wardrobe. And, synth and guitar duo Forget came up with the soundtrack that sounds loosely inspired by Daniel Lopatin’s Uncut Gems score.

As for Goldman’s social media handle, we haven’t been able to locate a @stachewman2013. It seems like a missed opportunity.

Uncut Gems is still playing in theaters nationwide. And if you missed out on A24’s New York City pop-up promoting the film, you can read about it here.
