Ty Segall Delivers Sketch-Rock Cover of Adult Swim’s Squidbillies Theme Song

Ty Segall is the latest artist to give the Squidbillies theme song a tinker. For his rendition, he decided to go in a sketch-rock direction. The prolific musician can be seen below in what looks like his home studio coming up with the majestic cover, which incorporates synth, percussion, guitar and vocals. His main objective was to create something “super sketchy”. You can also check out the final product below.

Ty joins a long list of musicians who have blessed the Adult Swim animated series with an inventive cover. The show’s 11th season kicked off on Sunday, October 11, and so far it has featured rapturous theme song covers by Steve Earle, Bob Mould, and Against Me!. Additional renditions are yet to come this season from Weird Al, John Prine, Camper Van Beethoven, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Matthew Kaminski (the Atlanta Braves organist). Previous seasons have showcased Father John Misty, Kurt Vile, Sharon Van Etten, and Lucinda Williams.

Squidbillies follows the Cuyler family, a clan of Squids living in rural Georgia. The show’s theme song is an excerpt from country musician Billy Joe Shaver’s “Warrior Man”. And, while other stanzas from the song have been used, the one most covered goes as follows:

My dreams are all dead and buried
Sometimes I wish the sun would just explode
When God comes and calls me to his kingdom
I’ll take all ya sons of bitches when I go!
Let Her Blow!

As for what else Ty is up to at the moment, he recently played a show in Los Angeles to benefit Puerto Rico. He characterized his set as being “anti-acoustic” and included a Credence Clearwater Revival cover. You can find out more about what went down at The Mat Mag. Also on the bill were King Tuff, Bleached, Mikal Cronin, William Tyler, and Shannon Lay.

Within the last couple months, Ty also released a couple of new singles, “Alta”, which he recorded at Electrical Audio with Steve Albini, and “Meaning”, a song to mosh to that features his wife Denee. You can find his upcoming tour dates below.

And to find out the latest antics that Early, Rusty and Granny have gotten themselves into, tune into Adult Swim this Sunday, November 6 at midnight for a new episode of Squidbillies.
