Courtney Barnett, Kurt Vile & More Cover Wilco for Compilation, Listen to Cate Le Bon’s “Company in My Back”

Here’s a compilation we can really sink our late-summer teeth into. In honor of the release of Wilco’s new album Ode to Joy, out October 4, Uncut has put together a compilation as an ode to Wilco. Free with the magazine’s November 2019 issue, the CD compilation, which has been dubbed Wilco Covered (or Wilcocovered for short), features 17 artists performing interpretations of classic Wilco songs. Musicians in the mix include Sharon Van Etten, Twin Peaks, Kurt Vile, Courtney Barnett, and Whitney. Uncut has shared a sneak listen of one track off the CD, Cate Le Bon performing “Company in My Back.” Check it out below along with the full tracklist. The November 2019 issue is available for pre-order here.

Wilco are currently touring Europe, previewing songs off Ode to Joy. After the record drops on October 4, they kick off their North American leg. The band pulls into New York City on October 12 to play Radio City Music Hall. And, on October 13, they play Brooklyn Steel. Both shows are sold out.

Uncut is touting Wilco Covered as being one of the best free, covermounted CDs the magazine has ever given away. With the exception of Puss N Boots’s “Jesus, Etc,” the covers were recorded specifically for Uncut and, as of now, are not available anywhere else. Along with the CD, the issue includes an in-depth interview with Wilco.

Welsh singer-songwriter Cate Le Bon contributes a hypnotic rendition of “Company in My Back” to the project. The song is off Wilco’s A Ghost Is Born (2004). Le Bon played at this year’s Solid Sound Festival, the event at MASS MoCA that Wilco organizes every other year.

There isn’t a song off Uncut’s compilation that we aren’t dying to hear. Wilco hand-picked the artists that contributed. Like Le Bon, some have played Solid Sound, or toured with the band, or are from Wilco’s hometown of Chicago. In the latter category are two groups who have released new albums in the last couple of weeks, Whitney and Twin Peaks. Whitney’s sophomore release, Forever Turned Around, is an easy on the ears, indie soft-rock gem. Twin Peaks, on the other hand, are a rambunctious garage rock fivesome. Their fourth studio album, Lookout Low, is out now. For the Wilco compilation, Whitney takes on Being There’s “Far Far Away,” while Twin Peaks wraps their instruments around “Spiders (Kidsmoke).”

We have high hopes for Courtney Barnett’s “Dawned On Me” off Wilco’s The Whole, Kurt Vile’s “Passenger Side” off A.M., and Sharon Van Etten’s “Radio Cure,” which appears on Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Ryley Walker has dared to cover a track off Ode to Joy, “Love Is Everywhere (Beware).” And, Parquet Courts has done multiple covers of Wilco and combined them into something the band calls “I Got Drugs (At the End of the Century).”

Wilco Covered is included free with Uncut‘s November 2019 issue. Again, you can pre-order it here. The issue hits UK shops on Thursday, September 19, 2019. Not sure what that means for us here in the United States, so you may want to order it online.
