Wilco Premiere New Song, “Tell Your Friends,” on ‘Live From Here’ (Listen) [Updated with Lyrics]
It wasn’t the Town Hall show Wilco fans were looking forward to, but the band were featured on last night’s Live From Here with Chris Thile. Jeff Tweedy and his clan premiered “Tell Your Friends,” a brand new coronavirus-era song they pre-recorded for the episode. Thile also played songs the Chicago-based group performed at a pop-up show in December for Songkick Live. Thile has taken the “show must go” on approach with his weekly variety show during the pandemic. As a result of the virus, the Punch Brothers’ frontman canceled the upcoming live tapings, including the episode with Wilco at Town Hall on May 2. He then launched Live from Home, where he challenges musicians, comedians, creatives, and fans to perform a virtual concert from inside their homes. He kicked off the series on March 16 with a cover of Wilco’s “Radio Cure.” You can watch it below.
In April, Thile returned to the airways with a new pre-recorded show. He came up with a format that brings together new material and performance submissions. Last night’s installment was the third in the makeshift series. Besides Wilco, guests included Norah Jones, Madison Cunningham, the Sklar Brothers, Tom Papa, and Marion Winik.
Wilco’s heartwarming “Tell Your Friends,” came early in the episode. The lyrics speak to our current times, Don’t forget to tell your friends//When you see them again//O’ I love you//O’ I love you. The show also included live recordings of “Everyone Hides,” “Via Chicago,” and “An Empty Corner.”
Other highlights of the May 16 installment were Thile and his Live from Heroes house band’s cover of Fiona Apple’s “Shameika” (at 4:43), and Norah Jones’s cover of Guns N’ Roses’ “Patience” (at 1:40:00). Thile returns on May 30 with a new show featuring Chicano Batman, Sarah Jarosz, Blake Mills, Aoife O’Donovan, Ryan Hamilton, and Eve Ewing.
In Wilco and Tweedy land, Jeff and his family are taking a break from The Tweedy Show this week so Jeff can work on his next book. They return to IG Live on Monday, May 25. But this week won’t be a total wash for fans of the band. Wilco is the musical guest on a new episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Wednesday, May 20.
UPDATE #1: There will be a “kids” edition of The Tweedy Show tonight (Wednesday, May 20). Sammy, Spencer, and Spencer’s girlfriend, Casey Walker, aka Case Oats, will go live on Susie Tweedy’s Instagram at 10pm ET/7pm PT.
