Tribeca 2018: Fest Adds Sandra Bernhard to André Leon Talley Doc Screening Panel; Film’s Trailer Out Now (Watch)

André Leon Talley Documentary Tribeca Film Festival Trailer Tickets PosterAmong its many strengths, the Tribeca Film Festival has an eye for fashion documentaries. For 2018, in addition to an illuminating profile of Chinese designer Guo Pei (Yellow is Forbidden) and a documentary about Alexander McQueen (McQueen), this year’s fest shines a spotlight on former Vogue Magazine fixture André Leon Talley. Tribeca will present the New York premiere of Kate Novack’s The Gospel According to André followed by a conversation with the film’s subject moderated by sassy and stylish shockertainer Sandra Bernhard. A trailer for the documentary recently dropped, you can check it out below. Tickets are still available for Tribeca’s “after the premiere screening” discussion, which, with the addition of the outspoken Bernhard (who will soon reprise her role of Nancy Bartlett on the Roseanne reboot), should be quite lively.

Tribeca has a storied past with fashion-forward films. In 2016, the fest opened with the world premiere of the stunning The First Monday in May, and, over the years, has featured such docs as Dior and I, House of Z, L’amour fou, and the James Franco-produced The Director.

As for The Gospel According to André, the film came into being largely due to the hubbub around The First Monday in May. The 2016 documentary, which is directed by Andrew Rossi, husband of Kate Novack, featured Talley. Novack accompanied her husband to screenings of the Tribeca opener and listened to André at the Q&As. She was so taken by him that she thought he was worthy of his own documentary and embarked on the project.

In terms of Novack’s handling of her subject, she delivers more than just a window dressing. Rather, her film is an intimate portrait of a complex man who was born into the Jim Crow South and navigated his way to the catwalks of Paris. In addition to interviews with Talley, the film weaves in archival footage and commentary from fashion luminaries such as Anna Wintour, Marc Jacobs and Tom Ford.

Tribeca’s special screening and conversation takes place on Wednesday, April 25, and, in addition to André Leon Talley and Sandra Bernard, features Kate Novack, producer Andrew Rossi (aka Novack’s husband), executive producer Roger Ross Williams, and producer Josh Braun. Magnolia Pictures will be releasing the film in theaters in May.
