Q’s Teen Sex Comedy ‘Brahman Naman’ Premieres at Sundance This Week, Watch its Racy Teaser Trailer

Another film having its premiere at Sundance this week is Brahman Naman. Screening in the festival’s World Dramatic Competition, the Indo-British production is the latest from Bengali cinema’s enfant terrible, Qaushiq Mukherjee, or Q, as he likes to be called. From the looks of the teaser trailer, which you can watch below, the film is a highly stylized, Porky’s-meets-Napoleon Dynamite, Indian teen sex comedy. If it lives up to its teaser, it should be a hot commodity at the festival.

Set in the 1980s, the film is centered around the quiz team scene that was popular in India at that time. Naman, played by Shashank Arora of Cannes hit Titli, is a nerdy brainiac with raging hormones. When him and his two pals (Ajay and Ramu) qualify for the National Quiz Championships, they embark on a cross-country adventure to Calcutta with the hopes of beating their rivals and losing their virginities along the way.

In addition to Arora, the film features Siddharth ‘Sid’ Mallya. A bit of a tabloid darling back in India, Mallya is the suave son of Indian businessman Vijay Mallya and made headlines for dating actress Deepika Padukone. In 2011, GQ named Sid the most stylish man in India.

As for the film’s director, Q has a reputation in India for being a renegade. His break-out film Gandu, which screened at Slamdance in 2011, is a grimy, black-and-white rap musical. It did well on the festival circuit, but was banned by the Indian government for explicit sex and language. He followed it up with the psychedelic fantasy film Tasher Desh (2012). And, among his most recent projects are the horror film Ludo (2015), which had its premiere at the 2015 Fantasia Film Festival, and Nabarun (2015), a documentary about Bengali writer Nabarun Bhattacharya. You can watch the trailers for these below. Q is definitely a filmmaker to watch.

Brahman Naman has its world premiere at Sundance on Sunday, January 24, 2016. The film is produced by Steve Barron, director of Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles (1990) and Coneheads (1993). For more information about Brahman Naman at Sundance, visit the festival’s website.
