Eric André Plays Brooklyn Show, Announces Netflix Comedy Special & European Tour

Eric André is trying to up his improv game. The comedian was recently in New York and performed at Union Hall in Brooklyn. Luckily we scored a ticket. The venue is small, it only fits around 100 people. Billed as “Eric Andre Improvises,” the show was part of Eric’s training for a one-hour comedy special he’ll be doing for Netflix sometime this year. He dropped this juicy nugget, among others during his appearance.

A few days prior to the show at Union Hall, Eric exercised his comedic improv chops at Shouting at the Screen. We didn’t make it out to this one, but the monthly series is co-hosted by Wyatt Cenac and Donwill and takes place at Alamo Drafthouse in Brooklyn. The evening involves a screening of an oldish film that a group of comedians makes fun of while imbibing copious amounts of alcohol.

As for the show at Union Hall, it was structured as an evening of stand-up with Eric as the host. Eric opened with some prepared material and then asked the audience to shout things out that he would make jokes about. It was sort of like crowd work, but with audience members volunteering to get picked on. Suggestions included Game of Thrones, Jimmy Kimmel, Captain Planet, and abortion, which he immediately shot down as something he wouldn’t joke about. During the improv portion, he frequently went back to making jokes about Jimmy Fallon. We got the impression, he might not be a fan of the Tonight Show host.

Eric was on the top of his game throughout the show. Between his quick-wit and cartoony facial expressions, his comedy was on fire. When he alluded to the Netflix special, he was anxious that he didn’t have enough material to fill up an hour. The audience didn’t think he’d have a problem.

Joining Eric were a diverse group of five exceptional funny people. He appeared to have personal relationships with all of them. The group included Jordan Temple, Victor Varnado, Sam Jay, Jordan Carlos, and Sydnee Washington. Jay encountered a heckler during her set. Thankfully, after some back and forth, the audience member walked out. The interruption threw Jay off slightly but she quickly recovered.

In addition to talking about the Netflix special, Eric also teased Season 5 of The Eric Andre Show. He removed his t-shirt at one point and felt that he had to justify his physique. He remarked that he was gaining weight for Season 5 of the show. It sounded like a joke, but you never know.

Eric also announced a European tour, which includes a stop at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. If you’re out that way, make sure you catch him. Tour dates below. And, for tickets, go here.
