Clear Your Schedule, Oh Sees ‘Face Stabber’ Live on KEXP Session Has Arrived (Watch)

January is typically a dry month for fans of John Dwyer’s Oh Sees (FKA Thee Oh Sees). The group goes into hibernation to work on new material, and we’re left combing YouTube and Instagram for scraps of live performances. But KEXP just poured us a heaping pitcher of the band. The Seattle station posted videos of the Oh Sees Live on KEXP in-studio session recorded on October 5, 2019. You can check out the full session below. KEXP also shared photos. You check those out here.

Dwyer and his current troupe, which includes Paul Quattrone and Dan Rincon on drums, Tomas Dolas on keyboards, and Tim Hellman on bass, stopped by the station during their Fall 2019 tour to support their latest LP Face Stabber. The tour included a three-night stand at Warsaw in Brooklyn and closed out on Halloween at the Teragram Ballroom in Los Angeles.

For the Live on KEXP session, the band start off with older tracks “Nite Expo” off Orc, and “C” off C. They then turn to the new album, performing “Snickersneese,” and “Together Tomorrow,” before launching into their newest anthem “Henchlock.” For that song, Dwyer whips out his fancy electronic wind instrument.

At 8 minutes in, KEXP’s Troy Nelson has a chat with the band, during which Dwyer admits to being a pig. They also discuss Dwyer’s recent birthday, metal bands, music the group is into, and Frank Frazetta and the story behind Face Stabber‘s cover art. While it doesn’t come up in the conversation, it appears from their clothing choices that Dan Rincon is a Nick Lowe fan, while Tim Hellman stans 80s experimental hardcore band Spike in Vain.

Ansley Elizabeth Lee’s photos of the session are also worth a look. The band brought one of their 8-track tape box sets to the station. You can see them showing it off.

Oh Sees have announced some EU shows, see below. Tickets are on sale now. They are also playing MELTED Music Festival in March. The Columbus, Ohio psych-fest, which is celebrating its second year, will also host Twin Peaks, Bob Hatt, Control Top, Death Valley Girls, Guerilla Toss, Mikal Cronin, Ohmme, Protomartyr and more.

In related news, Tomas Dolas’ other band, Mr. Elevator, just released their third full-length album, Goodbye, Blue Sky. It’s out now via John Dwyer’s label Castle Face Records.
