You Can Now Stream Twin Peaks & The Handsome Family’s Covers for Uncut’s ‘Wilco Covered’

Cate Le Bon Wilco Cover Wilco CoveredBack in September, we shared details of Wilco Covered, a CD compilation of Wilco covers spearheaded by Jeff Tweedy that accompanied the November 2019 issue of Uncut magazine. Until now, except for Cate Le Bon’s interpretation of “Company in My Back,” the covers made for the CD have been kept under wraps, available only to those who purchased the magazine. But as of Friday, two songs from the CD are available to stream and/or buy as singles, Twin Peaks’ cover of “Spiders (Kidsmoke),” and The Handsome Family’s rendition of “Capitol City.” You can listen to both of these amazing covers below.

Tweedy approached Uncut to do the compilation around the release of Wilco’s latest album Ode to Joy. How could the magazine say no? Especially when the Wilco frontman did most of the legwork. He personally invited the musicians to take part, among them Courtney Barnett, Ryley Walker, Kurt Vile, Whitney, Parquet Courts, and Sharon Van Etten. In total, the CD contains 17 reinterpretations of classic Wilco songs, deep cuts, and rarities.

As for the songs now available as singles, Chicago garage rockers Twin Peaks tackled “Spiders (Kidsmoke)” off Wilco’s 2004 LP A Ghost is Born. It’s among Wilco’s most-played live songs. For their cover, Twin Peaks do an excellent job of capturing the essence of the original with all its guitar flourishes, but scale it back. Wilco’s rendition runs 10 minutes 42 seconds, while Twin Peaks’ cover is 8 minutes 38 seconds. Twin Peaks does away with the long intro and changes the ending to be more of a fadeout.

On the flip side, gothic alt-country duo The Handsome Family cover a Wilco song that the band rarely plays live and they embellish it handsomely. “Capitol City” is off Wilco’s underrated 2011 release The Whole Love. The lyrics of the song come from a poem that appears in Tweedy’s 2004 poetry book Adult Head. For their cover, The Handsome Family (Brett and Rennie Sparks) get help from Alex McMahon on guitar and gadgets, and Jason Toth on drums.

Twin Peaks’ “Spiders (Kidsmoke)” is available to buy/stream here, while The Handsome Family’s “Capitol City” is available on Spotify or can be purchased here. Fingers-crossed the other artists also release their songs as singles.
